It seemed like what it was promising was too good to be true. But, I think it might actually work. I’ve lost a lot of weight, but my arms are still really flabby with a lot of loose skin. I applied the gel to my right arm only for several days. Even my husband noticed that the one arm was visibly better than the other. Granted, it’s not a miracle, and my arms have a long, long way to go, but there is definite improvement. In general, the gel is easy to apply. For me, it has a cooling sensation that is not at all unpleasant. I like to think of the cool tingle as a way to know it’s working. It does have a strong scent that lasts several hours. But, it’s definitely not an ‘old person cream’ smell. And, I’ll be applying the gel to both arms and hoping they both get better. First, let me start with what I liked about the product. I did get some pain relief with application of Hot Shot to my neck and shoulders. The peppermint oil extract in this product also helped somewhat to relieve some of my seasonal allergy symptoms. I actually really like the smell of this product, probably because of the almost immediate effects of the peppermint on my ability to breath and minor headache relief. I also like that this gel is soft and spreads easily and evenly with each application, and it dries relatively quickly.
After reading some of the other reviews, I feel that it's necessary to briefly explain the actual science-based causes of the hot/cold sensations from this gel, which are very similar to the effects of other analgesic (pain-relieving) topical products such as Icy Hot. This product does not cause your skin or any other part of your body to "get cold and burn fat." The two ingredients that are responsible for the *perceived* change in skin temperature are Menthol (Mentha Arvensis, the crystal extract form) and Capsaicin (Capsicum Annuum, derived from the cayenne pepper). Without getting too technical, the basic general mechanism and main medical theory behind how these two ingredients works is that they act on specific nerve receptors throughout the body that carry pain and temperature sensation to the brain. The effects on these ingredients on the nerve receptors essentially "tricks" the brain into thinking that it feels hot or cold temperatures. They do not actually change the local skin temperature of where Hot Shot is applied. (For more detailed information, there are many excellent papers and research articles on the internet on the topics of the "counter-irritant" mechanism and the "gate-control" theory of pain.)
This "hot/cold" sensation is also partially a result of blood vessel dilation that is caused by Menthol and Camphor, another ingredient found in Hot Shot. This dilation of the blood vessels also has another important effect that can transiently reduce the appearance of cellulite by allowing more blood to reach the surface layers of the skin (ie, these effects only last while these ingredients are being topically applied). Cellulite is a result of the "dimpled" appearance caused by fat cells stretching/squeezing through the connective tissue layer that covers the fat. By allowing more blood to get to the top layers of skin (the layers above this connective tissue), the extra blood will cause the area to temporarily fill in areas of the dimpling and, thus, transiently reduce the *appearance* of the cellulite but not actually get rid of it. Unfortunately, this also means that for those of you who have seen results, the results will begin to fade as soon as you stop applying the Hot Shot gel. :/ (As a side note, the prescription skin product "Retinol A" helps to strengthen the connective tissue layer that is over the fat cells, which is why it can also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.)
Additional information on the other active ingredients in this product:
1) Chamomile --> contains compounds called "flavonoids," which have natural anti-inflammatory effects, and this ingredient is often used to treat muscle spasms.
2) Camphor --> causes the above-mentioned blood vessel dilation and has some mild pain-relieving effects.
3) Capsaicin --> causes the effects listed above, and also causes "lipolysis" (breakdown of fat). HOWEVER, this fat breakdown does not mean that fat cells breakdown in the sense of being completely destroyed or killed, as implied on the expected results listed on Hot Shot's box, the jar, and also on First Botany's website. By "breakdown" of fat, this means that the Capsaicin stimulates the fat cells to release some their contents into the blood stream in the form of Free Fatty Acids. These fatty acids do not just "disappear" or go away forever. They circulate around your body via the blood stream and if they are not needed by the rest of your body for energy, they simply get restored back into your fat cells for potential use later on.
Ok, so hopefully I haven't crushed too many dreams so far, but I also have some concerns regarding a few warnings that are not listed on this product, but that I feel should be included:
1) There has been very little research conducted regarding the effects of Menthol on pregnancy, and it is not known whether or not Menthol enters the breastmilk.
2) Menthol may potentially interfere with the following medications and cause increased bleeding/bruising:
- Blood thinners such as Aspirin and Warfarin (Coumadin)
- NSAID's such as common over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen (ie: Advil, Motrin, Aleve)
- Steroids such as prednisone
3) Because Menthol and Capsaicin temporarily interfere with your body's ability to sense certain temperatures, there should be a warning listed stating that external heat (ie: heating pads) should NOT be used while using this product due to risk of severe burn injuries.
Hopefully now my concerns regarding Hot Shot gel are more clear, as well as the evidence-based reasons for the results typically seen with its use (unless I bored you to sleep - sorry for the long, never-ending review!) For now, I will continue to use Hot Shot to help alleviate some of my neck pain and seasonal allergies, but I hope that those others who are using or thinking about using this product will at least take what I've said into consideration and talk to your doctor before using it if you have any questions or concerns.
I truly and sincerely hope that the time I spent researching and writing this review has been helpful to you and has not made anyone upset. I am a former critical care RN and current medical student and truly have the passion and desire to help others, which includes wanting to make sure that others are well-informed.

Whenever mother nature comes around with a monthly gift, my lower back is in great pain. I often find myself using this on those occasions. It is hot but not too hot, so it is a relaxing feeling that enables me to sleep and not feel the pain as much.
Another useful thing I use this for is in conjunction with a stretch mark cream. I think the warming sensation of this really gets my blood flowing and gets my skin ready to absorb the other cream. I have noticed that when using this product together with my stretch mark cream, there has been a progress in fading the lines.
As for this products use as a slimming product, I had applied it on my stomach for a couple of weeks and didn't see a difference so I stopped using it for that purpose. Maybe I did not use it long enough, so I can't really say if I had continued for maybe a month if the results would be different.
I also don't really notice a disappearance in cellulite, but it may also be because I have not used it for more than a month.

The lady with the arms picture in the reviews is what sold me on buying the product. Unfortunately the product does not help get rid of CELLULITE long term, only short term (as long as you are consistently using and buying). Short term, it slightly reduces the appearance of cellulite but only while you have it on. As for SLIMMING, I did not see any difference at all. I used it while working out and didn't even feel any cooling or heating whatsoever. Does not help with sore or tight muscles.

I'm on my second one and I have to say I might probably have to go through 4 for my stomach alone but it's completely worth it. I'm a mother of 4 had horribly stretched and extra skin. Basically my main or only insecurity. Hated it kind of almost made me want to cry when I looked in the mirror it was that bad. I was very skeptical when I came across this product since there's so many beauty products that promise all these wonderful results and fail. Well this product is amazing it has helped tighten and firm my prune skin. My skin looks so much better healthier young again. Of course I still have more to go but I really trust this product will help me get to what I want my body to look like again. The price is very good for a product that will provide results. Now if it might help anyone I did get the best results applying a fair amount just enough to where its not absorbed completely and using a waist cinched or more like a sauna belt over it. I leave it for quite a while as long as I can stand it after some time it feels very hot sometime my skins a little red but it works. I don't think I've ever gone on and on about a product or been thankful it exist but thank you First Botany. I love this product.
